PRODUCT APPLICATION

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE STARTING PROJECT

SURFACE PREPARATION

Proper surface preparation is critical to performance. Allow newly poured concrete to cure for a minimum of 28 days. Sweep away all loose dirt and debris and remove any vegetation. If necessary, use a wire brush or sander to remove any loose or unsound concrete or masonry. Remove any efflorescence with RockSolid Efflorescence Remover (sold separately). Clean the entire surface, including any oil or grease spots, with RockSolid Heavy-Duty Cleaner (sold separately). Scrub the surface with a stiff bristle brush or broom. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Repeat as necessary to completely clean the concrete. For proper penetration for maximum adhesion, use Rust-Oleum Concrete Etch (sold separately). Follow label instructions carefully. When etching is complete, be sure to rinse 3 times with clean water and scrub with a stiff bristle brush while rinsing.

Allow the surface to dry completely before applying RockSolid Concrete Stain. Wipe your fingers over the clean, cry concrete. If you see any dust or powder on your fingers, repeat the scrubbing and rinsing until the surface is clean. If your fingers remain clean, the surface has been properly prepared and is ready for staining.

Existing coatings or sealers must be removed prior to applying RockSolid Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain. Test for a sealer by lightly sprinkling water on the surface of the concrete. If the water droplets bead up rather than soak into the concrete, then a sealer is present. The sealer will have to be removed by an alternate method of surface preparation, such as abrasive blasting or grinding.

APPLICATION

RockSolid Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain is ready to use. Do not thin. Apply only when air (ambient) temperature is 50-90ºF (10-32ºC) and the relative humidity is below 85% during the day and night. Do not apply in direct sunlight. Do not apply if rain is expected within 48 hours. Avoid applying late in the day when temperatures are falling. The formation of dew can interfere with proper curing. Use in well ventilated areas.

  • To minimize overspray, properly mask adjoining areas and avoid staining in windy conditions. Protect delicate foliage from overspray. Apply using a standard pump sprayer with an adjustable spray tip.
  • If using more than one gallon, intermix all cans of the same product to ensure color uniformity. Stir container thoroughly to mix product.
  • Use a brush to trim the perimeter and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Fill the pump sprayer with product; then fully pressurize the sprayer. Set sprayer tip to a fine mist and apply in a circular or figure eight pattern 10-12” from the surface, working is 6’ x 6’ sections. Start and stop the sprayer just off the work area to prevent drips. Do not pour the product directly on the surface or allow product to puddle.

Apply just one color of stain to produce a uniform appearance, or choose multiple colors to create unique combinations.

  • Lightly apply 1-2 base coat(s) to achieve 100% surface coverage. Additional coats will result in a more uniform appearance. Allow sufficient dry time (approximately 1 hour) between coats and before applying accent colors).
  • If desired, apply accent color(s) over the base coat to provide the desired level of contrast.
  • If desired, lightly mist the original base color over the entire surface to further “soften” the look.
  • On smaller areas, use handheld trigger sprayers, paint brushes, rags or sponges to apply the stain.

SEALER APPLICATION

For maximum protection and durability, apply a film-forming RockSolid Concrete Sealer (sold separately) over the stained concrete surface. Allow the stain to dry for at least 1 hour before top coating. Follow the sealer label instructions carefully. If desired, Rust-Oleum Anti-Skid Additive can be sprinkled (by hand) into the wet surface. RockSolid Concrete Sealer is not recommended for use on garage floors. For additional protection on heavy traffic areas or for more porous surfaces, apply a second coat after 4-6 hours. Occasional touch-up or recoat may be necessary for areas exposed to heavy foot or vehicle traffic.

DRY TIMES

Dry times are based on 70ºF and 50% relative humidity. Wait a minimum of 4 to 6 hours for light foot traffic. Wait 24 to 48 hours before returning heavy items, furniture and vehicles.

COVERAGE

Each gallon covers approximately 250-400 square feet on smooth, bare concrete. Coverage on rough or porous surfaces is approximately 175-250 square feet per gallon. Coverage rates may vary depending on the desired stain look.

CLEAN-UP

Wash tools and equipment with warm water and a mild detergent immediately after use. Properly dispose of all soiled rags and protect unused product from freezing.
