PRODUCT APPLICATION

SURFACE PREPARATION

Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or liquid stripper. Surface must be dry, clean and free of dirt, grease, glue and any existing coatings before staining. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress though #150 and #180 grits. Do not use steel wool. Remove all sanding dust. Pre-treat with Varathane Classic Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Following label instructions to ensure uniform color and grain raise control. Remove any raised grain that does occur after applying wood conditioner by lightly sanding with #220 grit sandpaper. Remove any sanding dust before testing color or stain application.

APPLICATION

Shake can vigorously before opening and stir stain occasionally during use. Do not apply when temperature is
below 55° F. Do not thin. Do not apply using a bristle or foam brush. Apply liberally with a clean, lint-free cloth. Apply the stain in a circular motion, using consistent pressure until the wood is evenly saturated. After 2-3 minutes, wipe the excess stain off in the direction of the wood grain. Do not let the stain dry before wiping excess. A second coat can be applied after 2 hours. Do not sand between stain coats.

APPLICATION TIPS

TESTING COLOR: Be sure to test your stain to verify the desired color. To test, stir the stain thoroughly and apply the stain in an inconspicuous area. When using more than one can, pour all contents together in a separate container and mix well to ensure color uniformity.

PROTECTING YOUR WOOD

To complete and protect your project, finish with a Varathane Polyurethane. Allow Varathane Classic Water Based Wood Stain to dry for 3 hours before applying an oil-based or water-based polyurethane top coat.

CLEAN-UP

For easy project clean-up, use soap and water.
