PRODUCT APPLICATION
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE STARTING PROJECT
IMPORTANT: All countertops should be tested for adhesion before coating the entire surface. Clean a small 3” x 3”, inconspicuous area, let dry. Apply Base Coat over area and allow to dry for 12 hours. Take a utility knife and make an “X” in the coating down to the surface. Apply a 4” piece of duct tape over the “X” and press firmly. Remove the tape with one quick pull. If more than 10% of the coating comes off, the countertop will need to be sanded with #60-#80 grit sandpaper before coating the entire surface. After a successful adhesion test, lightly sand test area before fully coating.
SURFACE PREPARATION Rinse or wipe away any dirt and dust. Clean the countertop with the 4 oz. cleaner included with the kit or a cleaner degreaser, such as Original Krud Kutter Cleaner Degreaser. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely. For any areas where caulk is present, caulk needs to be removed before applying coating.
NOTE: Failure to follow this preparation method may result in poor adhesion and possible coating failure.
SYSTEM APPLICATION
STEP 1: Rust-Oleum HOME Designer Series Base Coat Application. Rust-Oleum HOME Designer Series Base Coat is ready to use. Do not thin. Stir thoroughly prior to use. If using more than one can of Base Coat, intermix cans together for color uniformity. Apply when air, material, and surface temperatures are between 50-90°F (10-32°C) and relative humidity is below 85%. Use a high-quality bristle brush or edger to trim the perimeter and hard-to reach areas. Use the included microfiber roller cover or a high-quality, 3/8” nap roller cover to apply an even coat onto the surface. Apply Designer Series Base Coat in 4' wide sections and maintain a wet edge while rolling. Do not let product puddle. One coat is required; two coats may be necessary to ensure color uniformity.
*NOTE: For White, 2 coats are required. After coating the countertop, wait 4 hours before applying second base coat or applying any necessary touch-ups. Let touched-up areas dry for 1-2 hours (dry to touch) and then marble veining paint or topcoat can be applied.
OPTIONAL STEP - Marble Veining: Once base coat is completely dry, additional Rust-Oleum HOME coatings, such as the included Gray Veining Paint or Creative Accents (sold separately), can be applied to create a faux finish look. See Application Card for more information. Be sure to follow the on-bottle coating instructions and ensure the surface has thoroughly dried and is dust-free before applying the topcoat (Step 2).
STEP 2: Rust-Oleum HOME Designer Series Topcoat Application. The Designer Series Topcoat can be applied 4 hours after initial base coat application and 1 hour after optional marble veining application. Apply when air (ambient) temperature is 50-90°F (10-32°C) and relative humidity is below 85%. Do not thin
NOTE: Designer Coat must be applied within 5 days of base coat application. Combine the two components Part A and Part B by placing the pouch on the ground and rolling it from the Part A side towards Part B. The pressure created by rolling the pouch will force the middle seal to burst, allowing the two components to mix together. Any clumps need to be massaged to break them up to ensure proper blending. Thoroughly mix the materials by shaking the pouch back and forth and squeezing the edges and corners toward the center of the pouch. Mix for 3 minutes. The product is activated and must be applied within 45 minutes to 1 hour. The product must be used within the pot life indicated or gloss may appear uneven. Once the material is thoroughly mixed, use scissors to cut a corner off the pouch. Working in 4' wide sections, slowly pour the mixture directly onto the surface in 3 horizontal streams.
Use a high-quality bristle brush to trim the perimeter and backsplash, dipping your brush from the poured mixture. Use a foam roller cover (included in kit) to spread the Designer Coat throughout until it is coated and evenly distributed. As each 4' section is coated, roll one final time to finish in one direction by rolling from back to front, and moving left to right to ensure a smooth finish to minimize roller lines. Do not let product puddle. Only one coat is recommended. If a second coat is desired for additional durability or uniformity, apply after a minimum of 24 hours and before 7 days. If the 7 days recoat time has elapsed, the coating must be sanded prior to recoating. For vertical application (not recommended to exceed 4 inches high), apply Designer Series Topcoat in two thin coats.
IMPORTANT: Rust-Oleum HOME Designer Series Base Coat and Topcoat are required for the project.
DRY & TOPCOAT TIMES
For full system, allow 24 hours for light countertop use. Allow 72 hours before replacing large or heavier items (avoid dragging). Full cure is 7 days. Do not clean before 7 days.
CLEANUP AND STORAGE
Base Coat/Marble Veining Paint: Wash tools and equipment with warm water and a mild detergent. Dried product must be removed with lacquer thinner. Protect unused product from freezing.
Designer Coat: Tools and mixing equipment can be cleaned with acetone or MEK solvents. Allow brushes, rollers, and any unused product to harden and dispose according to local regulations.
LIMITATIONS
Not for use on exterior spaces. Not for use on interior surfaces that are sealed with a superhydrophobic sealer. Not intended to be used as a food preparation surface.
MAINTENANCE
Fully cured countertop may be cleaned with mild soap and water or a general-purpose cleaner such as Original Krud Kutter Cleaner Degreaser after 7 days. Do not use an abrasive cleaner.
USAGE
Surface Protection: As with most manufactured laminate and countertop surfaces, this paint finish will remain durable with proper use and care. Use a trivet or other protective material underneath all hot cookware and heated objects. Use cutting boards or other protective surfaces when preparing food. Heavy pounding, knives or other sharp utensils may scratch the surface. Do not allow water to pool for extended periods, clean up hot grease and any spills with a cloth or non-scratch abrasive pad.
