Description and Use
Zinsser Block Filler 2X Primer is a high-build acrylic primer designed for interior and exterior residential, commercial and industrial applications. It has twice the thickness of other primers to fill pinholes and seal voids in concrete block and masonry, resulting in a smoother and more uniform topcoat. Block Filler 2X tolerates high pH levels (up to 13) in new concrete and masonry and provides excellent alkali and efflorescence resistance. It can be applied to new masonry surfaces prior to full 30 day cure. Block Filler 2X high hiding formula seals semi-porous surfaces to provide better topcoat coverage and consistent sheen without pin holing.
Block Filler 2X provides excellent adhesion on all types of bare or previously painted surfaces, such as concrete, concrete/cinder block, brick, stucco, fiber cement siding, plaster, mortar, concrete masonry units (CMU) and other cementitious surfaces. Block Filler 2X fills voids in concrete, resolves mortar burns, delamination and film void issues. Block Filler 2X may be used with most water or solvent-based topcoats, including Rust-Oleum High Performance 9100 system DTM Epoxy mastic and High Performance 9800 System DTM Urethane Mastic.
PRODUCT APPLICATION
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free of any contamination, mildew, loose rust, efflorescence (concrete salts) or unsound coatings that may interfere with adhesion. If unsure, wash surface with a low suds cleaning solution like ammonia or a TSP substitute. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
APPLICATION
Apply only when air, material, and surface temperatures are between 50-90ºF (10-32ºC) and the relative humidity is below 85%. Thoroughly mix to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed before using.
Apply with a synthetic bristle brush, roller, or airless sprayer. Follow manufacturer's instructions when using spray equipment. For airless spraying use a 0.017" (517 tip) at 1500 to 2000 psi. Thinning is not recommended. Do not mix with any other primer. Wear NIOSH approved respirator and provide adequate ventilation.
TINTING
Block Filler 2X may be tinted with up to 2 ounces (59 mL) of universal colorant per gallon to improve the hiding power of the topcoat.
COVERAGE
One gallon will cover approximately 100 square feet on unpainted masonry surfaces and up to 300 square feet on previously painted surfaces. Coverage may vary due to differences in porosity and application method.
DRY TIME
Dries to the touch in 30 minutes and can be recoated in 1 hour. Full adhesion and hardness develops in 7 days. Lower temperatures and higher humidity will prolong dry and cure time. Allow more time at cooler temperatures.
CLEAN-UP
Clean up using warm water and liquid detergent. Wipe up splatters before they dry. Wash application tools in detergent and warm water immediately after use. Follow equipment manufacturer’s directions to clean spray equipment. Dispose of unused or unwanted product in accordance with local laws regulating water-based coatings.
LIMITATIONS
Not recommended for application to floors, decks or to surfaces subject to radon gas, immersion or prolonged contact with water, moisture or water pressure or below grade applications.
