PRODUCT APPLICATION
SURFACE PREPARATION
PREVIOUSLY FINISHED SURFACES: For best adhesion, surfaces must be clean, dry and free of wax, grease, oil, shellac, lacquer, mildew and polishes. Remove wax with a wax stripper, shellac with a paint stripper and mildew with a solution of up to 10% household bleach and tap water. Old finishes in poor condition must be removed. Sand to obtain a smooth surface. Do not use steel wool as rust may develop after the finish has been applied. Remove all sanding dust using a vacuum or cloth dampened with mineral spirits.
UNFINISHED SURFACES: Sand the area smooth, progressing from 120 to 220 grit sandpaper. Remove all sanding dust using a vacuum or cloth dampened with mineral spirits. If a filler or putty is used, make sure that it does not contain wax and allow enough time for it to dry thoroughly.
STAINED OR PAINTED WOOD: Apply Varathane Triple Thick Spar Urethane directly over cured stain. To verify compatibility, apply the product in an inconspicuous area first. For best results, use a Varathane Wood Stain.
APPLICATION TIPS: Product appears milky when wet but dries to a clear finish. Use care when applying over white or pastel paints or stains as discoloration may occur. Test Varathane Triple Thick Spar Urethane in an inconspicuous area before beginning. Testing is particularly important when applying over paints or stains as the appearance of these products may change slightly when a water-based finish is applied.
APPLICATION
Stir before using or if product has been sitting longer than an hour. Do not apply in direct sunlight. To prevent bubbles in the finish, DO NOT SHAKE. For best results, use at temperatures between 55°F - 90°F. Apply using a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in the direction of the wood grain in one thick, smooth uniform coat. If refinishing a previously coated surface or a second coat is desired, sand lightly with 220 grit sandpaper.
DRY TIME
Dry times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Dry times may be affected by temperature, humidity, and ventilation. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Triple Thick Spar Urethane will be dry to touch in approximately 2 hours and can be recoated in 2 hours. Allow 48 hours before light use of the project. Allow 7 days for full cure.
